How will we care for our Muslim patients and their families?

Question: What’s the first thing you do to learn how to provide spiritual care for a Muslim patient?

Answer: Ask questions and listen.

That’s one of the practical points Kamal Abu-Shamsieh presented during our first 2012 Spiritual Care Seminars at El Camino Los Gatos Hospital.

If we don’t ask we may fail in our spiritual care mission, Kamal warned, because Muslims are no more monolithic than Christians or Jews. “If you want to know how to provide spiritual care you have to start by asking the patient,” he explained. A video of his talk is available from the Mountain View or Los Gatos chaplain. His PowerPoint presentation is also available as a PDF file.
